Formerly included in siligorensis as a valid subspecies, but distinct; see Ruedi et al. (2021). Includes thaianus and badius; see Ruedi et al. (2021). Specimens of siligorensis from the Malay peninsula and N Borneo that were not allocated to subspecies prior to the division of siligorensis, we regard as provisionally belonging to alticraniatus, pending further review.
